"Light has its existence only because darkness gives it room for expression"
Artist Statement
Belinda J Bennett
I have taken photographs for as long as I can remember. Since doing a photography course at the Tasmanian Polytechnic (TAFE), Devonport, I have developed a new insight into composition and technique.
Black and White film is my first love, but digital photography has opened a whole new way of thinking for me. I can take the photo in colour and convert it to B&W if I wish. Advantages are: composition previewing before I continue shooting, setting up for the next shot, quick manipulation in Photoshop: less time spent developing a shot to get a final print.
Some of the gallery photos have been taken from a collection of photographs I took in Devonport and Melbourne for one of my Final Assignments in the Diploma of Photography. They turned out so well, it has inspired me to develop a new project in night photography. With the same concept of lonely, still darkness illuminated by street and car lights.
Many thoughts form in my mind when I am placed in an atmosphere of darkness, camera in hand. The night feels warm and still but lacks the human element. Except for the stream of car lights flowing around a corner leaving a ghost trail of where it once was. Details are hidden in the shadows, light - a beacon illuminating the scene. My other senses take over, my sight compromised only for that moment; I am part of the scene, I am the camera!
